Example of musician playing on his vielle ( an early violin) possibly for money.
Medieval music is thought to have been around throughout the Middle Ages to the Renaissance (about 500 AD. to 1400 AD.) Songs were written by semi-wealthy men because of papers expense at the time. Paper helped preserve the poems and cheerful songs written by entertainers. Medieval Instruments and MusicMany of the instruments played in medieval times were adapted into instruments played today in modern times such as the harp and the violin had similar medieval forms. These instruments were played by troubadours and entertainers wealthy enough to afford an instrument. If a group of Troubadours played together or sang together
they were called minstrels. What was usually the case was a wind instrument like a flute was played along with a stringed instrument like a gittern (evolved into guitar). The combo with one of the two being a singer( or both) would result in songs that would most likely be used to tell an entertaining tale about historical events, myths, and just down right silly stories.
